When D.C. Had Bullets Fever

Written by Thomas Threlkeld on . Posted in Washington Wizards

Dave Sheinin has a must-read piece in the Post about Washington's lone NBA champion, the 1977-78 Bullets team of Wes Unseld, Elvin Hayes [both Hall of Famers], Bobby Dandridge, Phil Chenier, Kevin Grevey, Mitch Kupchak and head coach Dick Motta. The great Bullets teams of the 1970s had been to two NBA Finals earlier in the decade, but had been swept out both times. The third time would be the charm in a brutal slog of a 7-game Finals against the Seattle Super Sonics.

The franchise is making an effort to properly honor that team 35 years after its greatest achievement. As the article notes, the team has not done much to celebrate it's sole NBA champ and the actual Finals trophy was only recently recovered from the closet of a deceased team employee. As the aging veterans of that team -- all but guard Charles Johnson, who passed away from cancer -- look back on what they accomplished, they now appreciate the memories far more than they once did.

“We all wanted it so badly,” Grevey recalled. “Wes had always come up short. Elvin had come up short. You can’t be considered a great player unless you win a championship . . . We talked about it all the time. Dick Motta talked about it. He knew this might have been the best assembled talent he’d ever had. We had a lot of belief, but not a lot of other people did.”

And then the Bullets, the third seed in the Eastern Conference, swept a best-of-three “mini-series” against Atlanta, and took down both the San Antonio Spurs (led by George “The Iceman” Gervin) and Philadelphia 76ers (led by Julius “Dr. J” Erving) in six games apiece. The NBA Finals against the Seattle Supersonics took a whopping 17 days to complete, start to finish --thanks to a scheduling conflict in Seattle with a mobile-home show that necessitated a bizarre 1-2-2-1-1 format, and a back-and-forth battle that pushed the series to a Game 7, on June 7, 1978 in Seattle.

In the locker room before Game 7, Hayes and Unseld, the Bullets’ veterans, called a team meeting. They were both 32 years old, looking out at a locker room in which seven of the other 10 players were 25 or younger. “We said, ‘We don’t have four or five more years – we have to do this now,’” Hayes recalled. “I think the guys looked into their hearts and said, ‘Let’s do it.’” ...

The game was as tight as you might expect, ultimately turning on a three-point play by Bullets forward Mitch Kupchak with just under a minute to play. Unseld, a 53.8 percent free-throw shooter that season, nailed a pair of free throws to clinch the victory – still the last time a team has won Game 7 of the NBA Finals on the road – and set off a wild celebration that stretched from the court in Seattle to the streets of D.C.

“I know for myself, it’s a vivid picture in my mind,” said Hayes, the Hall-of-Fame forward now living outside of Houston. “I can constantly close my eyes and see it. I can see Kevin Grevey running off the court at the end of Game 7, and I can see Wes, after so many years of coming up short – I can see that great weight lifted off his shoulders. Just moments that will never part from your memory.”

Back in their victorious locker room, the Bullets players were disappointed to find no champagne, only beer and soda, waiting for them. So they made do with the beer and soda until it was time to head back to the hotel, whereupon a group of players demanded the bus stop at a liquor store. Out of the bus and into the store went Grevey and a half-dozen teammates, armed with Abe Pollin’s credit card.

“The guy at the liquor store is looking at us like we’re crazy,” Grevey recalled. “He says, ‘Are you guys that basketball team?’ I said, ‘Yes, we are – and we want all your champagne.’”

The feelings of that time were summed up in an infectious tune called "Bullets Fever," written by local musician and big fan Nils Lofgren. Here they are:

Bullets Fever!  Happens to me every year

Bullets Fever.  And this year’s the one

Bullets Fever. Got the Doctor and the Iceman

Bullets Fever.  Seattle was stunned

You’ve gotta be a fan from old DC

To know what the Bullets mean to me

To see them get up and go all the way

For me Bullets Fever is here to stay

Bullets Fever!  Happens to me every year

Bullets Fever.  And this year’s the one

Bullets Fever. Got the Doctor and the Iceman

Bullets Fever.  Seattle was stunned

C.J. and Larry, Greg, Joe and Mitch

Ran the Bomb Squad into a ditch

C.J. Tom and Larry are fast as light

Kevin, Bobby and Elvin they shoot out of sight

Aint it beautiful how Bobby D plays so great

With the Big E!

(inaudible) …we blew the Sonics out

Now all the world knows what our team’s about

Bullets Fever!  Happens to me every year

Bullets Fever.  And this year’s the one

Bullets Fever. Got the Doctor and the Iceman

Bullets Fever.  Seattle was stunned

With all his heart Wes fought the west

Now every Bullet wears a champion’s ring

They’ve got our town screaming and stompin’

They turn it into a family thing

Come on coach Motta

King of basketball chess

Come on now fans support them every test

Bullets Fever!  Happens to me every year

Bullets Fever.  And this year’s the one

Bullets Fever. Beat the best in the world

Bullets Fever.  Now we’re number one!

Bullets Fever.  Come on Bobby D

Bullets Fever.  Put in a swish for me

Bullets Fever.  Let’s see that turnaround, Mr. Hayes

Bullets Fever.  See your play is amazing

Bullets Fever.  Hey Dick and Bernie, we’re pulling for you

Bullets Fever.  Dreams come true

Number one, number one…

Caps win, Move into First Place

Written by Mark Buterbaugh on . Posted in Washington Capitals

Left for dead a few weeks ago, don't look now, but your Washington Capitals sit atop the Southeast Division.  The Caps defeated the New York Islanders tonight in a shootout, 2-1.  That win, combined with a likely Winnipeg loss, puts the Caps in a tie for first place.  Winnipeg fell to Montreal 4-1.

Alex Ovechkin scored a shootout tally, while Braden Holtby shut down all three Isles' shooters to lead the Caps to the win.  With the win, the Caps move over .500 for the first time this season, improving to 18-17-2.

Mike Green scored the only regulation goal for the Caps with just 12 seconds remaining in the first period.  It was Greenie's 8th goal of the season and was assisted by Marcus Johansson and Nicklas Backstrom.  Green is now second overall among all NHL defenseman in goals this season.  It was also the fourth consecutive game Green has scored a goal, he has five goals over the last four games.

Kyle Okposos tied the game up in the third period at the 15:01 mark, a score that would ultimately lead to the shootout.

Matt Hendricks and Mike Ribeiro missed their shooutout opportunities, but Ovechkin buried his past Evgeni Nabokov for the only shootout conversion of the game.  Braden Holtby stopped an impressive 35 of 36 shots including a late barrage of shots in the last two minutes of regulation.

In one night, the Capitals jumped from the tenth spot in the Eastern Conference to the third spot.

Sweep! Nationals crush Marlins 6-1

Written by Thomas Threlkeld on . Posted in Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals completed a 3-game sweep of the visiting Miami Marlins on a cold, cloudy day this afternoon, using more solid pitching and big lumber from the top half of the lineup to crush the Marlins 6-1.

Starting pitcher Jordan Zimmerman [1-0] scattered eight hits over six innings and the the bullpen finished the job, with Henry Rodriguez, Tyler Clippard and Craig Stammen combining for 3 scoreless innings. Meanwhile, the first four batters in the lineup -- Denard Span, Jayson Werth, Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman -- went 8-14 with 6 RBI, 5 runs and 2 runs.

The Nats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first innings after Werth and Harper got on base and Zimmerman doubled them both across the plate. The Marlins struck back in the second when Justin Ruggiano crushed a Jordan Zimmerman pitch 393 feet into the right field seats to cut Washington's lead in half.

However, the Nats bats were just getting started. Harper singled home Denard Span in the third inning and Harper took second base on a throwing error. He was later thrown out trying to steal third base, but the Nats had pushed their lead up to 3-1.

Meanwhile, Jordan Zimmerman was carefully working his way out of some jams and his infield helped out by turning two double plays on Marlins  shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria to kill Miami scoring opportunities.

The game stayed close until the bottom of the seventh when Wilson Ramos led off with a single. He took second when Steve Lombardozzi, hitting for Henry Rodriguez, sacrificed Ramos over to second. A wild pitch sent Ramos to third and then Denard Span walked to put runners on first and third with one out. Jayson Werth demolished a pitch 434 feet over the left-center fence. The hit put the Nats up 6-1, allowing manager Davey Johnson to rest Drew Storen and Rafael Soriano

The win improves Washington's record to 3-0, drops division rival Miami to 0-3 and concludes a lopsided season-opening season that saw the Nationals outscore the Marlins 11-1. It took the Marlins 19 innings to put one runner across the plate, but could do no better.

The Nats now move on to Cincinnati where they will play a Reds team that won more games last year than any team in baseball -- apart from the Nationals. That series should provide a sterner test for the reigning NL East champs.

Nats agree to minor league deal with Chris Young

Written by Mark Buterbaugh on . Posted in Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals have agreed to terms with P Chris Young on a minor league deal.  Young was with the Nats during spring training and pitched effectively.  He was released by the Nats so he could seek a major league deal.

Young made 4 starts in the spring and posted a 2.25 ERA.  Young allowed 5 runs over 16 innings and fanned 9 batters while allowing 11 hits and 7 walks.

After seeking a major league deal and not finding one, Young will report to Syracuse (AAA).  He will likely be the starter called upon should the Nationals suffer injury in the rotation.

Nats shutout the Marlins, again

Written by Mark Buterbaugh on . Posted in Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals are two games into their 2013 season and the pitching staff has not allowed a run yet.  After a 2-0 season opener win over Miami, the Nats defeated Miami tonight 3-0.

Gio Gonzalez (1-0) was the start of the show, tossing 6 shut out innings and smacking a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to give the Nats a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish.  It was Gio's second career home run.  The final numbers for Gio were 6 innings with 0 runs,  hits, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts.  He threw 91 pitches, which 55 were strikes.   Ryan Mattheus pitched a perfect 7th inning, forcing a 6-4-3 double play and ending the inning with a strikeout.

The Nats manufactured their second in the 7th inning when Danny Espinosa opened the inning with a single.  Kurt Suzuki laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt that moved Espinosa to second base.  After pinch hitter Chad Tracy walked, Roger Bernadina pinch ran and ran into Miami's second baseman on a failed double play that allowed Espinosa to score and the Nats to take a 2-0 lead.

The final Nats run was started by a leadoff double by Bryce Harper, who finished the day with two more hits, now sitting at 4 for 8 on the season.  Ryan Zimmerman followed Harper's double with an RBI single to push in the Nats final run.  Zimmerman was 2 for 4 on the night with a triple.

After putting two runners on in the ninth inning, Rafael Soriano settled to preserve the shut out and earn his second save.

Jordan Zimmermann will take the mound tomorrow at 4:05PM as the Nationals attempt to open the season by sweeping division rival Miami.

Our Nats player of the Game:

Quick Notes:

*  Denard Span is acting like a leadoff hitter.  He got on base his first three at bats, smacking a single and walking twice.  His fourth at bat he grounded into a fielders choice to drive in a run.

*  Bryce Harper is 4 for 8 on the season.

*  Gio Gonzalez's home run tonight was the second of his career.

*  The Nats first two starters have tossed a combined 13 shut out innings.

Punchless Wizards fall to the Raptors

Washington Wizards guard Garrett Temple (17) tries to keep a ball in play against the Toronto Raptors during the first half at the Air Canada Centre

The Washington Wizards were officially eliminated from the playoffs tonight after playing well for 23 minutes and then falling apart after halftime. The Raptors recovered from a terrible second quarter and defended their home court, defeating the Wizards 88-78.

Apart from knocking the Wiz out of the postseason, the loss dropped Washington's record to 28-47 and a miserable 7-30 on the road.

Rookie Raptors center Jonas Valanciunas scored a career-high 24 points only four made shots, going 16-18 from the free throw line. DeMar DeRozan added 25 points on 21 shots to pace the Raptors, who clamped down on the defense in the second half to win the game.

Washington Capitals Trade Away Elite Prospect For Martin Erat

Written by jacobware95 on . Posted in Washington Capitals

Mar 19, 2013; Columbus, OH, USA; Nashville Predators left wing Martin Erat (10) skates with the puck against the Columbus Blue Jackets during the third period at Nationwide Arena.

The Washington Capitals have acquired RW Martin Erat and C Michael Latta from the Nashville Predators for prospect Filip Forsberg.

Erat, 31, has 481 points in 723 career NHL games. He should add a boost to the Caps' top-six as they gear up for a playoff push. Latta, 21, has never played in the NHL and should report to the AHL's Hershey Bears.

The Caps lose arguably their top prospect and one of the top prospects in the league in Forsberg, drafted 11th overall this summer. At 18, he recorded 33 points in 38 games for Leksand in the Swedish HockeyAllsvenskan this year.

The trade is a bold statement by the Caps. If it doesn't pay off, you'd have to think GM George McPhee's job is in jeopardy.
