Week 17: Cowboys @ Redskins Preview

Written by tomblaz on . Posted in Washington Redskins

Where: FedEx Field, Landover, Md.

When: Sunday, Dec. 30 at 8:20 p.m. ET

Watch: NBC WRC4

Listen: Sportstalk 980, WTEM

Point Spread: Washington (-3)

The NFC East is at stake when the Redskins host the Cowboys on Sunday night at Fed Ex Field. Essentially, the playoffs begin with Dallas as the nation watches "Football Night in America" on NBC. Weather could be a factor, with the dreaded wintery mix expected. Pro Bowl quarterback Robert Griffin III is getting healthier by the day and should have less restrictions than he had Sunday in Philadelphia. The Washington offense is 484 yards away from setting a team record. Rookie running back Alfred Morris needs 104 yards on the ground to break the All-Time season record currently held by Clinton Portis. A win and the 'Skins host a team from the NFC West during wild-card weekend, a loss and the season may be over.

Skins Likely Hosting White Hot Seattle If They Make Playoffs

Written by tomblaz on . Posted in Washington Redskins

The Redskins goal remains simple, win and your in. A victory over Dallas on Sunday night at Fed Ex Field and Washington is the NFC East champ for the first time since 1999.

Washington could back into the playoffs as a wildcard if they lose on Sunday night, but would need the Vikings to lose to the Packers and the Bears to lose in Detroit.

It's likely that the winner of the Cowboys-Redskins game will be NFC East champ and the loser's season will end. This is definitely the case for Dallas, and will be for Washington as well, should Minnesota and/or Chicago win.

The NFC East champ will be the #4 seed and will host the #5 seed, likely Seattle. Just be thankful that this potential matchup would be at home!

The 5th Quarter: Redskins 27 Eagles 20

IT WAS OVER WHEN... Head referee Ed "Hercules" Hochuli announced to the crowd that Eagles QB Nick Foles committed intentional grounding with one second left on the clock. Trailing 27-20, the Eagles drove down to the Redskins' 5-yard line and with eight seconds left in regulation, Foles took the shotgun snap and went back to pass. Seeing no one open quickly, Foles drifted to his left, trying to buy time for his receivers, as DE Stephen Bowen closed in on him. Foles threw the ball to no one in particular as Bowen was dragging him to the ground. [See photo above.] Foles was out of the tackle box so the pass would not have been intentional grounding if the ball had landed at or beyond the line of scrimmage. However, the ball landed one yard in front of the line of scrimmage so the intentional grounding call was correct. A 10-second runoff is customary in these situations and since only one second remained on the clock, the game was over. Five yards away from having to face overtime on the road, the Redskins saved their season for one more week.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING... Rookie TB Alfred Morris rushed 22 times for 91 yards, giving him 1413 on the season, only the fifth time a Redskins running back has amassed 1400 rushing yards in a season and the first time a rookie has done it. The single-season franchise rushing record is 1516 yards by Clinton Portis back in 2005, so Morris needs 104 yards on Sunday against Dallas to take the record for himself... Morris has 10 touchdowns, the most by a Redskins rookie since Hall of Famer Charley Taylor... PK Kai Forbath hit two field goals today, from 45 and 42 yards, extending his streak to 17 straight made field goals to begin his NFL career, a new record. That includes field goals from distances of 50 yards, 49 yards, two from 48 yards and several more from 45 yards or longer... WR Santana Moss caught a beautiful 22-yard TD pass from Robert Griffin III today, giving Moss 8 TD receptions this season, his most since he caught 9 for the Skins back in 2005... The interception RG3 threw today was only his 5th of the season... Griffin has thrown 20 TD passes this season, after tossing two today... For the fifth straight game he has played, Griffin had a passer rating over 100. He has such games this season... Griffin has thrown for over 3000 yards this year, the first rookie quarterback to do that in franchise history.

Ryan Kerrigan chases Nick Foles. (AP Photo/Mel Evans)

I LIKED THAT... Clearly uncomfortable moving around too much in his knee brace, RG3 instead stood strong in the pocket, completing 16 of 24 passes for 2 TD, 1 INT and 198 yards for a passer rating of 102.4. By contrast, the healthy Nick Foles danced and fidgeted in the pocket whenever pressure got too close... the pass Griffin threw to Moss for a 22-yard TD was about as perfectly thrown as a pass can be... When Griffin did run -- and he only ran once -- he quickly got out of bounds after a five yard gain... NT Barry Cofield was tremendous, chasing down running backs from behind, tipping 3 passes and getting good penetration on his pass rushes... OLB Ryan Kerrigan got two sacks today, both because of incredible effort and fighting through blocks to get to Foles. One of those sacks resulted in a fumble turnover for the Redskins... the Redskins recorded a season-high 5 sacks, with Lorenzo Alexander, Madieu Williams and Perry Riley joining Kerrigan in getting to Nick Foles.

I DID NOT LIKE THAT... DB D.J. Johnson got beaten for a long TD pass for the second straight week. In Cleveland Johnson got caught peeking into the backfield and let a receiver get behind him for a 69-yard TD pass. Today, he tried to jam Jeremy Maclin at the line of scrimmage, missed and let Maclin get behind him for a 27-yard TD catch... the Redskins gave up 411 yards of offense to a 4-11 team playing with a backup rookie QB and missing star wideout DeSean Jackson... the Eagles had five drives of at least 60 yards... The Redskins offense mustered only one drive longer than 60 yards...

AND IT ALL MEANS... The Redskins are 9-6, all alone atop the NFC East and can clinch their first division championship and a home playoff game for the first time since 1999. The Redskins hardly looked their best today, with the offense struggling to maintain long drives and the defense struggling to get stops at all, but they won a division road game and that is usually tough to do. It's going to be a long holiday week for Redskins fans as they wait for Sunday to return, when Washington will defend their home turf against their most hated rival, the Dallas Cowboys. Redskins fans have pined for years for big games in December. Well, it doesn't get any bigger than a home game against the Dallas Cowboys on the final week of the regular season, with the division championship hanging in the balance. Welcome to the big time, Redskins and their fans.

The Redskins Playoff Picture

Written by Thomas Threlkeld on . Posted in Washington Redskins

This is how the NFC East looks tonight, with our Washington Redskins proudly perched atop after 16 weeks for the first time since 1999.

TEAM REC PCT PF PA NET TD DIV CONF STREAK
Redskins 9-6 .600 408 370 +38 45 4-1 7-4 W6
Cowboys 8-7 .533 358 372 -14 35 3-2 5-6 L1
Giants 8-7 .533 387 337 +50 41 2-3 7-4 L2
Eagles 4-11 .267 273 402 -129 26 1-4 2-9 L2

The easiest way for the Redskins to go to the playoffs [and for all of us to understand] is if they defeat the Dallas Cowboys, who visit FedEx Field on Sunday [or Sunday night if the game if flexed out of the afternoon.] If the Redskins beat the Cowboys, the Redskins will win the NFC East with a 10-6 record and the Cowboys make early golf plans with an 8-8 record.

If the Redskins lose to the Cowboys [shame on them], Dallas would win the NFC East because the two teams would have split the head-to-head matchups, would have identical 4-2 division records, but the Cowboys have the better record against common opponents. That's right, a team that is -14 in net scoring right now would win the NFC East and host a playoff game. Let's hope the Redskins don't let that happen.

The Redskins can make the playoffs as a wild card if they lose to the Cowboys, but they would need help from teams like the Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings. If one of those three teams wins and gets to 10 wins, the Redskins could still make the playoffs because they own tiebreakers with all three of them. However, if two of those three teams win the Redskins would be out of the playoffs because there would be two non-division winners with 10 wins and the Skins would only have nine.

In other words, win and they're in. Lose and they need help. To hell with help. Just win. The fact that Dallas is the opponent Sunday only makes it sweeter if the good guys win.

Redskins Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down: Week 16

Written by Mark Buterbaugh on . Posted in Washington Redskins

It was a nail biter.  It shouldn't have been.  Nonetheless, the Redskins won their six consecutive game and set up a perfect scenario for the NFL, it all comes down to the last week of the season, Dallas v. Washington.  Talk about injecting energy into one of the greatest sports rivalries.  The Redskins defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 27-20 in Philadelphia to improve to 9-6.  They have guaranteed themselves their first winning records since 2007.  So who gets the Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down?

THUMBS UP (We are giving three instead of two this week)

LB Ryan Kerrigan:  Kerrigan continued his impressive streak of outstanding performances.  He is Pro Bowl worthy.  Kerrigan recorded 5 tackles, 2 sacks, and a forced fumble.   He is adding the pass rush that was absent for swaths of game this season.  His timely forced fumble came on a drive the Eagles were sustaining in the late part of the second quarter.  Kerrigan has helped propel a resurgent Redskins defense over the course of the 6 game winning streak.    He now has 4 sacks and 2 forced fumbles over his last 6 games.

LB London Fletcher:  Fletcher recorded 10 sacks and had a pass interception.  It was the third consecutive game Fletcher picked off a pass.  He has 4 picks in his last 5 games.  Fletcher has 5 total picks on the season.  With a suspect secondary, the linebackers have taken over the turnover machine for the Redskins and Fletcher has been an integral part of that.  Redskins linebackers have 9 total interceptions on the season, led by Fletcher's 5.  He keeps getting older, but his level of play has shown no sign of wearing down.

WR Pierre Garcon:  Garcon led the Redskins with 8 receptions for 89 yards.  He came up big for his hobbled rookie quarterback.  The Redskins have improved to 8-1 on the season with Garcon in the lineup.  There is no bigger player on the field that has made such an impact on the Redskins six game winning streak.  He also made two very nice critical blocks today.

Honorable Mention:  Give up for a sensation TD reception by Santana Moss, in the on the side of the endzone with an incredible foot drag to get both feet in.  Just an incredible catch.

THUMBS DOWN

DJ Johnson:  When you think the Redskins secondary can't get any weaker, enter DJ Johnson.  For the second consecutive week, Johnson gets beat deep.  Shameful.

Redskins win 27-20 over Eagles

Written by Thomas Threlkeld on . Posted in Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins defeated the Philadelphia Eagles moments ago 27-20 to improve their record to 9-6 overall and 4-1 in the division.

The game went down to the final play, when Eagles QB Nick Foles, who led his team down to the Washington five yard line with seconds left, rolled out to his left and was grabbed by DE Stephen Bowen. With no timeouts left, Foles had to throw the ball to stop the clock and he tossed it forward, to no one in particular. He was out of the pocket, but the "pass" failed to reach the line of scrimmage, thus forcing the referees to call intentional grounding. WIth one second left on the clock and a penalty runoff of 10 seconds, the game ended with that play.

The loss drops the Eagles to 4-11 in 2012. This was likely Eagles' head coach Andy Reid's last home game in Philadelphia and his team struggled mightily to send him off a winner, but they came up just five yards short.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys are trailing at home to the New Orleans Saints. The Giants play later today in Baltimore against the Ravens. The Minnesota Vikings will likely continue to defy gravity and beat the Houston Texans, improving their record to 9-6. That means the Redskins cannot clinch a playoff spot tonight, though the team will prevail in any tie with the Vikings because the Redskins beat Minnesota earlier this year.
