Redskins get some R.E.S.P.E.C.T

Accustomed to seeing their favorite team correctly regarded as doormats, Redskins fans can be forgiven for blinking in surprise to find the team suddenly the talk of the football world and soaring up the assorted power rankings. [DC Pro has them at 8th overall. See 32 other rankings here.] As Bruce DePuyt of News Channel 8 writes, it isn't just us at DC Pro that are ranking the Skins in the "top tier."

In fact, of the nearly three dozen power rankings compiled by the DC Pro Sports Report, the vast majority – 25 of 33 – put the Redskins eighth. Others have the club between ninth and 13th (except for the Baltimore Sun which, remarkably, thinks the ‘Skins are the seventh best squad in pro football). ...

Why are the Redskins gaining respect? Blogger Tom Threlkeld says a lot of teams that played well early – like the Ravens, Steelers and Giants – have stumbled.

In addition, folks took notice of how the team played without its star QB last week. “A lot of people were particularly impressed by the Cleveland win,” Threlkeld says.

As for the remainder of the regular season, Threlkeld – a Redskins fan since childhood – admits he’s a bit nervous. “We’ve seen how the Redskins handle adversity – quite well. What we don’t know is how they’ll handle prosperity.”

I think that's the question foremost in the minds of most Redskins fans right now. [And perhaps a few Redskins players.] The Skins have shown brief flashes of ability before, only to sink back into mediocrity or worse, betrayed by a perennial lack of elite talent. This time seems different, though. Washington has the best rookie passer in the league [apologies to the terrific Russell Wilson], who is, in fact, one of the top quarterbacks overall. The Redskins also have the NFL's second-leading rusher, two top offensive linemen [Trent Williams and Will Montgomery], a stud wideout in Pierre Garcon who is finally healthy, and a defense that scares no one, but has clearly improved in the last month or so.

Just as importantly, the Skins are one of the healthier teams in the league. Washington lost top players like OLB Brian Orakpo, DE Adam Carriker and TE Fred Davis earlier in the season and have had weeks and months to adjust. With Montgomery, RT Tyler Polumbus and QB Robert Griffin III all apparently making quick recoveries from their injuries -- and with a more than competent backup QB waiting in case he's needed -- Redskins fans can be forgiven for feeling something unfamiliar to them -- optimism.

RGIII not 100%, but may play

Written by Mark Buterbaugh on . Posted in Washington Redskins

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said today that rookie QB Robert Griffin III is not yet 100%, but barring any setbacks, he will play on Sunday against Philadelphia.  Griffin practiced fully today and did not have any setbacks.

Griffin is battling a knee sprain sustained in the win against Baltimore.

OT Tyler Polumbus did not practice today.  He left the game last week early due to concussion symptoms.  The fact he did not practice today is not a good sign we will see the starting right tackle on Sunday.  With backup Jordan Black suspended on a bog PED violation, right tackle looks to be either in the hands of G/T Maurice Hurt or rookie draft pick Tom Compton.

Some excellent news on the offensive line is that C Will Montgomery practice fully today.  Montgomery suffered an MCL strain last week.  Montgomery was quoted today saying "I'm good to go."

LB Lorenzo Alexander suffered a shoulder stinger last week.  He was limited in practice today but looks to be good to go for Sunday.  DE Stephen Bowen and LB London Fletcher were both limited at practice today.  Both are expected to play on Sunday.

RGIII sixth overall in Pro Bowl Voting

Written by Mark Buterbaugh on . Posted in Washington Redskins

Washington Redskins stand out rookie QB Robert Griffin III was sixth overall in the NFL in fan voting for the NFL Pro Bowl.  Among NFC quarterbacks, Griffin was second, behind Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers.

Pretty impressive for a rookie.

Denver QB Peyton Manning topped New England QB Tom Brady for the top spot overall in fan voting.  Manning received 993.045 votes.  In the sixth spot, Griffin received 683,943 votes.

Redskins Roundup: Getting healthy

Written by Thomas Threlkeld on . Posted in Washington Redskins

Good news -- these two are feeling better. [AP Photo]

Yesterday we reported the good news: Robert Griffin III participated in a full practice yesterday and is on pace to start against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Also in that report was good news on C Will Montgomery, who practiced fully despite a grade 2 sprain of an MCL. Have to expect him to start on Sunday, which is big, since Montgomery has been playing at an All Pro level this year. RT Tyler Polumbus did not practice and still has to satisfy all the concussion protocols before he can practice or play, but head coach Mike Shanahan said he is showing no signs of the concussion and he, too, is very likely to start and play on Sunday.

Lorenzo Alexander [shoulder] and Stephen Bowen [torn upper triceps] were limited in practice yesterday, but will probably play on Sunday.

Speaking of the Eagles game, here is our preview of that Sunday matchup.

Brian McNally takes a look at the Eagles, noting their defense is bad, their coverage teams are worse, rookie QB Nick Foles is up and down and TB LeSean McCoy will play for the first time since suffering a concussion in the last Redskins-Eagles matchup.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doubts the Redskins-Cowboys game in week 17 will be flexed to 8.20 on Sunday night. That's fine with me, though I can't imagine which game would be more momentous or attractive to a national audience.

Rick Snider is impressed with the Redskins' quarterback situation.

Jason Reid writes the Redskins should not trade Kirk Cousins -- ever. I think Reid is wrong about that. I believe Mike Shanahan will eventually deal Cousins, but not until he's gotten a few good, inexpensive seasons of peace of mind from his other rookie quarterback.

RG3 fined $10K for postgame attire.

Kirk Cousins has a bad haircut.

If you care what LaDainian Tomlinson thinks, he believes Seattle QB Russell Wilson should be Rookie of the Year.

If you still care what Rob Parker thinks, read his "apology" to RG3.

RG3 in full practice today

Written by Thomas Threlkeld on . Posted in Washington Redskins

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III took part in a full practice today, a key sign that he's recovering nicely from his the sprain in the LCL of his right knee. Head Coach Mike Shanahan said Griffin looked "good" today and took "most of the reps" he would normally take.

C Will Montgomery, suffering from a second-degree MCL sprain, practiced fully today and Shanahan believes he will start on Sunday.

RT Tyler Polumbus did a walk-through today, but did  not practice as he recovers from his concussion. The team will follow concussion protocols that Polumbus must satisfy before he can practice or play again.

DE Stephen Bowen is in pain with an upper biceps tear he suffered early in the Browns game, but he can play with it and Shanahan indicated he will probably play on Sunday. A tear in the lower biceps would have put Bowen on the shelf.

Week 16: Redskins @ Eagles Preview

Written by tomblaz on . Posted in Washington Redskins

Where: Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia

When: Sunday, December 23 at 1:00 p.m.

Watch: FOX, WTTG-5

Radio: SportsTalk 980, WTEM

Point Spread: Redskins (-5.5, 44.5)

UPDATE: Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan has indicated that barring a setback, Robert Griffin III will start at quarterback for the Redskins in Philadelphia on Sunday.

The Redskins are looking for their sixth straight victory and to solidify their hold on first place in the NFC East. Washington can clinch their first playoff birth since 2007 with a win, combined with losses by the Giants, Bears and Vikings. The focus again this week is targeted on the health of quarterback Robert Griffin III. Should RG3 not be able to go, the 'Skins will again go with fellow rookie Kirk Cousins. The return of receiver Pierre Garcon has added balance to the offense, but make no mistake, Washington is getting it done on the ground. Rookie running back Alfred Morris already holds team rookie records for carries, yards and touchdowns. The Eagles (4-10) are in last place in the NFC East, but running back LeSean McCoy has been cleared from his concussion and will start on Sunday.

Redskins Roundup: Will the missing pieces be found by Sunday?

Written by Thomas Threlkeld on . Posted in Washington Redskins

Rob Carr/Getty Images

The Redskins are movin' on up to heights they have  never seen in The World's Most Prestigious Power Poll. We also have a roundup of where the Skins rank in the top 33 NFL power polls.

RG3 didn't play last Sunday so did he lose his top spot on the season rookie QB rankings to Russell Wilson? Find out by reading the latest edition of Tracking the Rookie Quarterbacks.

The Redskins can clinch a playoff spot this Sunday if they win and get some help. Here's how it happens. The New York Giants lose at Baltimore, the Chicago Bears lose at Arizona and Minnesota loses at Houston. I think the Vikings WILL lose in Houston and I think the Giants might lose in Baltimore. But the Bears lose in Arizona? I know the Bears are reeling, losers of five of their last six. And I know the Cardinals broke their 9-game losing streak last Sunday. But there is no way I can believe the Bears lose to the Cardinals. The Cardinals were practically invented to help struggling teams regain their confidence.

Robert Griffin III missed last Sunday's game in Cleveland, though he insists he could have and wanted to play. Will he play in Philadelphia this weekend? We don't know  yet, though the first clues will come in today when Griffin practices with the team. How much he practices and how he looks will be our first hints about his availability this weekend. Some fans seem to be assuming Griffin will start, but Ed Werder of ESPN says he's talked to medical experts who say the injury Griffin suffered is a 3-week injury, at least.

The Redskins don't have a great offensive line, though LT Trent Williams and C Will Montgomery have both played at an All Pro level this year. What the Skins line has had is consistency, with the same five guys starting every game this year. That could end on Sunday in Philadelphia, with Montgomery struggling with a sprained knee and RT Tyler Polumbus trying to recover from a concussion. Jordan Black's suspension complicates a bad situation.

Mike Shanahan is now confident that his team has made real progress since he arrived in 2010. It blood well should have.

Offensive Coordinator Kyle Shanahan explains how and why the Redskins read-option offense is working so well:

Kyle explains that the offense forces defenses to account for 11 players rather than 10, since the quarterback is part of the play. This opens up things everywhere else on the field. Washington runs, by Kyle's count, about nine plays per game off the read-option and the threat it creates. And when the Redskins are running it -- not playing off it -- an extra gap is created. It plays the angles and is built to put defensive guys in bad spots, which, he reminds, is offensive football.

Kyle concedes it can't be all you do in the NFL. But it can be an important element, so long as you can keep your quarterback upright.

"We don't want Robert to get hit, but the thing I've noticed is that people notice when he gets hit running the ball," Kyle Shanahan said. "But they don't realize how violent it is in the pocket. ... He doesn't get hit like (Matt) Schaub did or Rex (Grossman) did. Robert will do that (dropback) stuff, but with the threat of the zone-read, and the fact that he's not sitting there, defensive linemen aren't teeing off on him. It's not the same."

Still, to make it work, the Redskins have built in rules for Griffin. In scramble situations, he's only to run when he's not accounted for by the defense. And in most of those spots, he's told to use the angles and run to the sideline. They're coaching him to slide some, and get out of bounds more -- on option plays, too.

Kyle Shanahan also mentions that Griffin's two injuries this year came on scrambles, not designed runs.

TB Alfred Morris has set franchise rookie records with 1322 rushing yards and 9 TD. He's only 194 yards shy of the season rushing record of 1516 yards set by Clinton Portis back in 2005. Mike Shanahan deserves some of the credit for that.

“His blocking is scheme is perfect and ideally suited to run the ball effectively,” ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. said. “It doesn’t matter who the running back is. The running backs historically in Shanahan’s offense, be it in Denver or in Washington, have been outstanding. That’s not to take away from the ability of these guys. They obviously have ability. But all these guys that weren’t highly regarded are putting up numbers.”

Portis seems fine with Morris breaking his record, if that happens:

“I’m actually rooting for him,” Portis told Holden Kushner and Danny Rouhier on 106.7 The Fan. “In my eyes, records are kind of meant to be broken. And just to even have the luxury of having it [was meaningful]. I think Alfred Morris is a class act, a young guy who came in and handled things properly and did it the right way. You never really hear him boast and brag about his accomplishments. And I think a lot of it is overshadowed by the great play of RGIII, but I think what they’re doing as complimentary players to one another is great for the city.”

Rich Tandler runs through some of the numbers on defense:

Earlier this year the Redskins were on pace to give up more passing yards than any other team in NFL history by a wide margin. They are no longer threatening the record book but they still have their issues in pass defense.

They have given up 3994 yards passing so far this year. That is the fifth-highest total ever through 14 games.

The Redskins do have company at the bottom of the all-time list. This year’s Saints have given up 4018 yards through the air and the 2012 Bucs have allowed 4349 yards, the most ever at this point in the season. When all is said and done, this could be a record year for passing.

The Washington rushing defense is better, ranked sixth in the NFL. That certainly is due at least in part to the fact that opponents don’t bother running against them because of the success that can be had going at them through the air. The Redskins defense has faced just 319 rushing attempts, the second fewest in the league.

But they can make a solid claim regarding Adrian Peterson. The Vikings running back is an MVP candidate and could break Eric Dickerson’s record for rushing yards in a season. When the Redskins faced the Vikings in Week 6 Peterson gained 79 yards on 17 carries. In eight games since then Peterson has not been held to under 100 yards in a game and has been held to fewer than 150 yards just twice.

Tandler also has some good stuff about how Pierre Garcon remains the favored wideout of Redskins quarterbacks, London Fletcher's play has improved recently and Rob Jackson has been making big plays at linebacker.

John Keim asks some good questions about Washington's upcoming game in Philly. Among other things, Keim wants to know if RG3 will play and what sort of shape will the offensive line be by Sunday?

Sally Jenkins writes that Mike Shanahan should be a candidate for coach of the year.

LG Kory Lichtensteiger won the Ed Block award.

RG3 has the fastest-selling jersey in NFL history.

Even the French press are covering Rob Parker's demented attack on RG3.

Tracking the Rookie Quarterbacks: Week 15

Written by Thomas Threlkeld on . Posted in Washington Redskins

Below is our week 15 evaluation of all the rookie quarterbacks starting in the NFL this season. Below that is how we have evaluated all the rookie quarterbacks over the course of the 2012 season. We have a surprise winner of the weekly award and the season-to-date order has been shuffled a bit for the first time in weeks.

Russell Wilson 60.0 209 1/0 8.9 92 3 104.4 W, 50-17

Kirk Cousins -- The 4th rounder shined in his first NFL start, with the Skins scoring a season-high 28 points in the second half and trouncing Weeden and the Browns in Cleveland. Cousins overcame early struggles and a pick to absolutely demolish a decent Browns defense the rest of the game, expertly using an array of rollouts and bootlegs to baffle the opposition. He was tough against pressure and accurate on short passes and downfield. Cousins also displayed more quickness and athleticism than he has previously.

Nick Foles -- He was under pressure constantly from Cincinnati's talented defensive line and it showed. Foles was antsy in the pocket, missed on some throws he should have nailed and was generally inaccurate. Didn't make a lot of big mistakes [his running back and special teams took care of that], but he didn't make any big plays for his team either.

Robert Griffin III -- DNP - knee sprain

Ryan Lindley -- It wasn't a good game, but it was easily his best game and the Cardinals ended their nine game losing streak. Lindley took the caretaker role to new extremes, focusing almost exclusively on not making any mistakes. He still made a few, but not many and he was more accurate than in past games. At least he didn't look completely lost on the field.

Andrew Luck -- Wasn't accurate against a suspect Houston pass defense, but he was under a lot of pressure because his offensive line could not handle JJ Watt and the Texans defensive line. Avoided turnovers for once and threw two TD passes -- both while being blitzed. Oddly, he was otherwise terrible against the blitz all day.

Ryan Tannehill --  The best game of his pro career, though, admittedly, it came against a bad Jaguars team. Tannehill was accurate, made plays down field and ran well when required. He threw no picks, though he did lose a fumble.

Brandon Weeden -- Took a step back on Sunday against a poor Redskins pass defense. Was not accurate, made only one big play, when the game was already out of reach, and threw numerous bad passes. Two of those bad passes landed in the hands of Redskins linebackers. Continued his bad habit of staring down receivers and telegraphing his intentions to defenders.

Russell Wilson -- Another terrific game for the diminutive rookie, who ran like RG3 against a horrid Bill defense. Passed for one TD, rushed for 3 more and racked up over 90 yards with his legs. Did a nice job of getting the ball downfield and he hasn't fumbled in more than a month.

Weekly Winner: Russell Wilson
