Caps hire Calle Johansson as an Assistant Coach
The Washington Capitals have reached back into the history of the franchise to name a new Assistant Coach to join the staff of new Head Coach Adam Oates. The Caps have added former Cap Calle Johansson to the staff as Assistance Coach.
Johansson played for Washington from 1989 to 2003. During that time period, Johansson, a Defenseman, scored 110 goals and added 343 assists. For his career, he posted 119 goals and 416 assists. Johnasson was a first round pick, 14th overall, of the Buffalo Sabres in the 1985 NHL Draft. He was named to the 1988-89 NHL Rookie Team, scoring 42 points. Johansson retired in 2003/04 after signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs at the trade deadline. He has worked as a color commentator for the NHL and Swedish Elite League (SEL) on Swedish television. His only prior coaching experience came in 2006-07, when he was an assistant coach for Frolunda of the SEL.
