Caps trade Vokoun to Pens

The Washington Capitals traded G Tomas Vokoun, who had none month left on his contract, to the Pittsburgh Penguins for the Pens 2012 seventh round draft pick.  Vokoun immediately inked a 2 year, $4 million deal to backup Marc-Andrew Fluery and be provided some playing time between the pipes.

Smart move by the Caps.  Why?  Easy.  Vokoun was not returning tot he Capitals and the Capitals had no real interest in Vokoun's returns.  Seventh round picks are by no means sure pick, most are not, but at least they walked away with something.  The Caps goalie situation is completely resolved with Braden Holtby and Michal Neuvirth.

As for Vokoun, he had to have known that there was no starting job out there.  Why else would he agree to this and not just got o July 1 free agency?  If there was a situation out there where Vokoun could start for a decent team, then this as just a dumb business move on his part.   Regardless, the one year Vokoun Era has ended in Washington, DC.
