Everyone knew resolution for the contract of Washington Capitals goalie Semyon Varlamov would come soon. He was set to become a restricted free agent on July 1st. There have been reports of ongoing negotiation between Varlamov and the Capitals, but that Varlamov had rejected all of Washington’s latest offers.
Now, according to reports from Dmitri Chesnokov from Yahoo Sports, Varlamov’s agent confirmed that Varly has chose to go to the KHL and leave the Capitals and the NHL. No word yet on monetary numbers of any deal in Russia, as of yet. Even going to the KHL, the Capitals retain all NHL rights to Varlamov until he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
Varlamov was annointeed the Caps starter out of training camp last season, but once again, fell to reoccuring groin injuries and eventually lost the starting role to Michal Neuvirth. This move simply means Varlamov was unwilling to compete with Neurvirth for the starting role.More details to come.
