UPDATE:   Caps lose Boyd Gordon.  Gordo has inked a two year deal with Phoenix.  It is unclear whether the Caps intended on keeping Gordon, but for the price Phoenix paid, 2 years over $2.6 million. I will take Halpern anyday for that price.

The Washington Capitals free agency period has started.  Still no word on deals with restricted free agents Karl Alzner and Troy Bouwer.

However, the Washington Capitals welcome back a former Capitasl, Jeff Halpern.  Halpern inked a one year deal worth $825,000.00 with the Caps.  The 35 year old center played last season with the Montreal Canadians.  Halpern appeared in 72 games and scored 11 goals and added 15 helpers.

Halpern played in Washington from 1999 through 2006.  In his final season with the Caps, Halpern played in 72 games in the 2005-06 season and scored 11 goals and added 33 assists.

Halpern is your Boyd Gordon replacement and more.  he is an excellent penalty killer and posted over 56% success on faceoffs.  He is a former Washington Capitals captain, and along with newly acquired Troy Bouwer, is expected to help transform the Capitals locker room.  The signing of Halpern is another indication of that transformation ideaology taking place in the fornt office.

And for those of you Philadelphia Flyer haters and the fact the Flyers inked Jaromir Jagr, he is a great rememberance.
