Washington Capitals came on ice with a two game losing streak, victims of a home and away sweep by the Boston Bruins, and were looking for an offensive spark. They got that spark from Alexander Semin, who netted his fourth career hat trick to lead the Caps to a 4-3 OT win over the Atlanta Thrashers.
Tomas Fleischmann scored the game winner on a rebound left by Atlanta goalie Chris Mason at the 1:37 mark in overtime. It was Flash's 3rd goal of the season, a big one at that.
The Caps gave up the first goal in the first period, a shot by Andrew Ladd to put the Thrashers up 1-0. Atlanta out shot a lazy Caps team 13-4 in the first period.
Semin struck on his first goal just 37 seconds in ten second period, a nasty wrister that Mason has no shot at saving. Less than 4 minutes later, young Evander Kane struck with his first of two goals to give the Thrashers a 2-1 lead. That is where the second period ended.
Caps came out on a three minute power play on a 5 minute major by Dustin Btfuglien, but failed to convert after Brooks Laich took a penalty during then power play. But, Alexander Semin went to work. So did Mathieu Perreault, called up from Hershey last night. Perreault assisted Semin' s second goal at the 5:09 mark to even the score at 2-2. 8 minutes later, Perreault made a pretty pass to Semin, and Semim had Mason off the mark and tallied the hat trick and gave the Caps their first lead at 3-2. It was Perreault's second assist, both to Semin. Kane struck his second goal to knot the score at 3-3 with just 33 seconds left in the game.
Flash connected on the rebound in OT for the win. Michal Neuvirth stopped 29 of 32 shots for the win. Caps snap a two game losing streak to improve to 5-3 on the young season.
