Caps recall Braden Holtby, assign Sabourin
UPDATE: Semyon Varlamov will not accompnay the Capitals on the three game raod trip this week that takes them to Carolina, Minnesota, and Calgary. Given the road trip, Braden Holtby could very well make his NHL debut. ---
The Washington Capitals have recalled 21 year old goalie and 4th round pick ofthe 2008 NHL Draft Braden Holtby. They have assigned Danny Sabourin back to Hershey. Sabourin was recalled over the weekend because of a groin injury to Semyon Varlamov. Again.
Holtby is also a prized prospect goalie, which the Caps seem loaded with. Holtbyhas played in 5 games withHershey this season and is 4-0-1 witha GAA of 1.97 and a save percentage of .933. Holtby could very well make his NHL debut this coming week. Caps play Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
Once again, Caps top prospect goalie Semyon Varlamov is sidelined with the same groin issue. Varly has spent much of the past two season injured, and it has to be alarming to the Caps brass. Meanwhile, fellow young goal tender Michal Neuvirth has taken advantage of Varly's injury woes and seized the starting job in Washington. Neuvy has played in 8 games with 7 starts. He has posted a 5-2 record, a 2.53 GAA and a .912 save percentage. In our opinion, at this point, Neuvirth should be the uncontested goalie.
