Washington Capitals Complete Pair of Minor-League Deals

The Washington Capitals have made a pair of minor-league deals, acquiring defenseman Kevin Marshall from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for forward Matt Ford and picking up center Mike Carman from the Colorado Avalanche for defenseman Danny Richmond.
The deals mark the second and third minor trades the Caps have completed this season, after they acquired defenseman Tomas Kundratek from the New York Rangers for forward Francois Bouchard. Kundratek has since made his NHL debut with the team.
Kevin Marshall is currently halfway through his third professional season with the AHL's Adirondack Phantoms, the minor-league affiliate of the Flyers. In 32 games this seasons, the 22-year-old has scored two goals and added three assists for five points, to go along with a minus-six. He has amassed 55 penalty minutes in that time. A hard-nosed, physical, defensive defenseman, Marshall, who was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2007 NHL draft by the Flyers, made his NHL debut this season, appearing in 10 games and going pointless and -1 for the Philadelphia club.
Matt Ford, who moves the other way, had scored 10 goals and added 18 assists in 39 games for the Hershey Bears this season, in what was largely a third-line role.
Mike Carman, a University of Minnesota Golden Gophers graduate, is also in his third professional season. Through 28 games with the Lake Erie Monsters this year, Carman has three goals and three assists for six points, along with a minus-two and 10 penalty minutes. The 23-year-old, drafted by the Avalanche in the 3rd round of the 2006 NHL draft, is a defensively sound center who excels in the faceoff circle and in the physical side of the game, but is a player that brings limited upside offensively. He has yet to make his NHL debut.
Danny Richmond had four assists through 24 games with the Hershey Bears, but often found himself a healthy scratch with the great defensive depth Hershey possesses. The trade becomes the third trade the Caps have completed with the Avalanche in the past 15 months, after acquiring Scott Hannan for Tomas Fleischmann on November 30, 2010, and sending Semyon Varlamov to Denver on July 1st, 2011 for a pair of 2012 draft picks.
Both Marshall and Carman will report to the AHL's Hershey Bears.
