Caps trade rights to Dennis Wideman to Flames

It is official.  Defenseman Dennis Wideman will not return to the Washington Capitals this season.

The Capitals have traded the right to negotiate with Wideman to the Calgary Flames for a 2013 fifth round draft pick and D Jordan Henry.  What a haul for a player the Caps had no intentions of retaining.

Henry was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2007 by the Florida Panthers.  Henry was acquired by the Flames on July 9, 2011 for D Keith Seabrook.  Henry played in 52 games last season for the AHL Abbotsford Heat and 16 games for the AHL Chicago Wolves.  He tallied 2 goals and 9 assists and was a -4.  He is primarily a stay at home defenseman. No doubt, for the Capitals, the key to this deal was that 2012 fifth round draft choice.  Nice job by GM George McPhee.

Calgary in turn inked Wideman to a 5 year deal worth $5.25 million per season.  Wow.  One thing I am glad of is the fact Washington is far away from that deal.
