Caps getting active as trade deadline nears

Stung by a 6-0 shutout at home last night, the Washington Capitals have begun what could become a series of moves to bolster the roster.

Washington acquired F Marco Sturm off waiver from the LA Kings.  Sturm had just 9 points in 17 games with the Kings this season.  Sturm played with the Boston Bruin last season and scored 22 goals and added 15 assists in 76 games.  He had 4 goals and 6 assists on the Boston power play last year.

To make room for Sturm, the Capitals waived F DJ King.

The Capitals also recalled goalie Todd Ford from the Hershey Bears.  That signals one of two things.  One, Semyon Varlamov is hurt AGAIN, or two, Varly could be in a forthcoming trade.  Kind of an odd move by the Caps.  Additionally the Capitals sent Mathieu Perreault back to Hershey and recalled Jay Beagle.  Could that possibly be signaling a trade involving Perreault?

Washington has been linked to possible deals including Andy McDonald, Alex Hemesky, Tim Connelly, and goalie Tomas Vokoun.  The trade deadline is quickly approaching on Monday with a record number trade deals already complete throughout the NHL.

UPDATE:  Varly hurt again according to the Washington Post.

Between Mike Green, Varly, Alexander Semin, Tom Poti, and Boyd Gordon, we have some real injury prone players in Washington.  Period.  It gets sickening after awhile.

If you are wondering why Ford was the goalie recall, the answer is quite simple.  Braden Holtby and Danny Sabourin are both hurt for Hershey.  Unbelievable.
