Caps waive Roman Hamrlik

The blue line shuffle continues in Washington.  Today, the Caps waived 39 year old veteran Roman Hamrlik.  The move should come as no surprise given the fact the Caps needed an open roster slot and Hamrlik had played in just 4 of the 20 games this season.

Hamrlik is in the second year of a two year deal with the Caps.  He counts $3.5 million against the caps salary cap.  Any team that claimed Hamrlik off waivers would be responsible for the remaining salary.  It is unlikely he will be claimed at that price.

The Caps recalled D Steve Oleksy from Hershey yesterday.  HC Adam Oates sited the needed for more right handed shot balance, although the move for Oleksy also likely has to do with adding grit and toughness to the blue line as well.  Oleksy appears to be in tonight, while Jeff Schultz is a health scratch.

Oleksy joins fellow former Bears Tomas Kundratek as defenseman that started the season in Hershey.
