Detwiler to the pen, Wang to the starting rotation
In a move that seemed destined after his last start, P Ross Detwiler was moved out of the starting rotation and into the bullpen. Taking his fifth starter role will be Chien-Ming Wang. Detwiler made 9 starts for the Nationals posting a 3-3 record with a 3.88 ERA. Not bad. However, in his last three starts, Detwiler hasn't gotten past the fifth inning, allowing 13 runs in 14.1 innings. Wang made his long anticipated Nats debut this season last night in relief, allowing 1 run over 3 innings and picking up a win. Wang has long been anticipated to join the Nationals rotation and Detwiler recent struggles made that happen today.
said, “About like he took it when I took him out of the game [Friday] with two outs to go in the fifth. I want him to take it that way.”
Manager Davey Johnson also named Tyler Clippard and Sean Burnett as co-closers. Last week Johnson removed a struggling Henry Rodriguez from the closer role, as they await the return of closer Drew Storen after the All Star Break. Clippard has picked up consecutive saves the last two games against the Braves. On the season, Clip has appeared in 22 games and is 1-2 with 3 saves and a 2.91 ERA. He has recorded 27 strikeouts in 21.2 innings. Burnett has appeared in 17 games and has two saves. He has posted an impressive 0.68 ERA and has fanned 16 batters in 13.1 innings.
