Nats minor league leaders (6/20), Garcia, Wort impressive
The Washington Nationals minor league system has some bright stars in it given the position of the last 5 to 7 MLB Drafts. We could highlight many players, but we limit it to a revolving few each week. Today's focus is on two Nats minor league hurlers out of the bullpen.
27 year old Christian Garcia was recently promoted from Harrisburg AA to Syracuse AAA. Deservedly so. Garcia was selected 99th overall in the 2004 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees. He came to the Nats via free agency. In 18 games this season with AA Harrisburg, Garcia posted a 1-0 record with 7 saves. He recorded an impressive 1.35 ERA and walked only 6 batters compared to 28 strikeouts over 20 innings. Those numbers were good enough to earn him a promotion. Garcia has only appeared in 4 games out of the Chiefs bullpen, but has not allowed a run in five innings of work. He has recorded a 1-0 record with 1 save during that 5 game stretch. He has not yielded a walk, but has fanned 8 batters in 5 innings.
Another impressive bullpen hurler is the Nats 30th round pick of the 2009 MLB Draft, Rob Wort. Wort has appeared in 21 games for the Potomac Nationals (A) and has posted a 1-2 record with 5 saves and an ERA of just 1.10. Through 21 games, Wort has appeared in 32.2 innings and has allowed 9 walks to an eye popping 56 strikeouts. He is currently on a 7 games, 9.2 scoreless inning stretch in which he has fanned 19 batters.
