Are Nats interested in Michael Bourn?

According to CBS Sports, the Washington Nationals have interest in free agent CF Michael Bourn.  That news is hardly surprising.  It seems for two solid off-seasons, the Nationals have been linked to Braves center fielder.

The Nationals have longed to get a speedy center fielder to secure the middle of the out field and hold the leadoff spot for a few season.  They made do this season by putting rookie stud Bryce Harper in center.  However, there is little doubt that Washington still covets a speedy center fielder so they can move Harper to right field.

In Tim Dierkes Top 50 free agent list, he lists the Nationals as the favorite to land the Atlanta outfielder.

3.  Michael Bourn - Nationals.  The speedy Bourn plays strong center field defense and gets on base just enough.  The free agent market generally rewards power, but these days Bourn's skillset is appreciated as well.  Bourn has long been speculated as the heir apparent to the Nationals' center field job, and the team's comfort with agent Scott Boras doesn't hurt.  Still, this match is far from a lock if we're talking Torii Hunter 2007 money.  I don't expect the Braves to re-sign Bourn, but the Phillies are another potential match.

We shall see.  Again, Bourn has been linked to Washington for nearly two off-seasons, along with OF Denard Span.

Dierkes also believe that Washington will resign 1B Adam LaRoche.  Both the club and LaRoche have confirmed ongoing discussion, but a long term deal is not expected to be close at this time.  Dierkes correctly assumes that should the Nationals land Bourne and re-up LaRoche, that would likely put Mike Morse on the trading block.  Morse would likely be slated to play first base should the Nats be unable to secure a long term deal with LaRoche.  However, if LaRoche is resigned, with Jayson Werth and Bryce Harper already set in the outfield, Morse's trip to the trading block seems likely.

As for current Nats free agent, Dierkes project Edwin Jackson to sign with the Blue Jays and reliever Sean Burnett to sign in St. Louis.  I for one would like to see the Nats resign Burnett, while retooling other areas of the bullpen.
