Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reports that the Washington Redskins' acquisition of QB Donovan McNabb could very well be just the start of the moves in Washington. Citing several credible NFL sources, Redskins new HC Mike Shanahan and GM Bruce Allen are far from done remaking the roster to fit Shanahan's schemes, and purging the roster of attitude problems.
DT Albert Haynesworth may not be the only expected move, as sources cite the Redskins are open to 'multiple offers'.“[Shanahan] and [General Manager] Bruce Allen want to shake it up,” said one NFC personnel man. “There are some personalities they want to move out before training camp. I think some of it is the attitude of the locker room, and some of it is just the fit [schematically].”
Beyond defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, the NFC source refused to reveal specific names, but said the Redskins appeared to be open to offers on “multiple” players.
“I think they’re going to be aggressive,” he said. “There have already been some calls.”
First off, I fully expect Haynesworth and QB Jason Campbell to be dealt. But, it would not surprise me in the least to see the Redskins deal RB Clinton Portis and S Laron Landry. Not only is Portis not the running back he used to be, but his unwillingness to work hard in the offseason and preseason, as well as propensity to appeal past his head coach to the owner, couldn't sit well with Shanahan, who has already traded him once. If Portis is indeed dealt, you can be rest assured that Dan Snyder is out of football operations.
Trading Landry is a no brainer if you can get something for him. His rookie deal is up next year and the Redskins have no intention of keeping him. His pass coverage is poor, his tackling sucks because he plays for the highlight reel and his attitude last off-season isn't what Allen and Shanny like. In addition, reports surfaced that he was also mentioned in the McNabb discussions with Philadelphia.
For those readers of ours who were so mad at the Redskins last year and wanted this team to be blown up, well, your wish is being granted. And with that, this writer is absolutely fine.
