Final 53 Cutdown: Redskins release Hightower, Talk trade with Dolphins

The NFL deadline to cut roster down to the final 53 is today. The Washington Redskins coaching staff has some serious decision to make at wide receiver, linebacker, secondary, and special teams. We will track them all here and will keep our Roster Tracker Thread updated as the news comes in. The Roster Tracker Thread has a running list of roster transactions. We invite you to join our Message Board and discuss the roster reductions. This season is different form recent past seasons. The Redskins roster has much more quality depth and some of the players who get cut today will likely have no problem finding a spot elsewhere.

UPDATED: The Redskins are reportedly in trade talks with the Miami Dolphins. Washington could be looking to send WR Anthony Armstrong to Miami in exchange for RB Steve Slaton.

UPDATED: Multiple sources are now reporting that RB Tim Hightower will be released. Clearly, his knee is not fully healed. With that news, rookie RB Alfred Morris confirmed the obvious, that he has made the roster.

UPDATED: Aldrick Robinson has confirmed that he made the roster. Good for him. This kid played well this pre-season and deserved a roster slot.

UPDATED: John Keim is reporting that WR Brandon Banks has made the final 53. Other sources also have confirmed. Banks speed was likely too much to pass up and also shows that ST Coach Danny Smith continues to have influence.

UPDATED: Redskins plan to release CB David Jones. That means the Redskins will go with 4 corners. More good news for Brandon Banks? (Via Rich Campbell) That is 16 players released to told they would be released. Redskins have formally stated that 22 players will be released today. We are 16. 6 more to go!

UPDATED: Redskins have released DT Marlon Favorite. Favorite played well int he pre-season finally, but got caught in the numbers game. That is 13 cut thus far.

UPDATED: Another former draft pick has been released. CB Brandyn Thompson was released by the Redskins. (Via Grant Paulsen) That will leave five corners currently on the roster: DeAngelo Hall, Josh Wilson, Cedric Griffin, Doug Jones, and Richard Crawford.

UPDATED: The first Wide Receiver decision has been made. The Redskins have released WR Terrence Austin. (Via Chris Russell) Austin becomes the TENTH known player to be released.

UPDATED: Redskins have released NT Delvin Johnson. (Via Zac Boyer) To count, that is NINE released thus far.

UPDATED: Redskins have informed Chris Wilson and fourth rounder Keenan Robinson that they made the roster. (Via Zac Boyer)

UPDATED: Redskins have released sixth round draft pick OT Tom Compton. (Via Rich Campbell) That makes four reductions on the offensive line.

UPDATED: Veteran LB Bryan Kehl has been told that the team will seek a trade, but if they are unsuccessful, he will be released. That clears up Linebacker a bit and is a good sign for Chris Wilson, who played hard and deserved a spot. (Via Rich Campbell)

UPDATED: Redskins have released OL Grant Garner. That makes Garner the third offensive lineman released, joining Cook and Smith.

UPDATED: Washington has released Maryland product DT Doug Worthington. That brings the total to SIX players released. (Via Rich Campbell)

UPDATED: Redskins have released CB Travon Bellamy and RB Tristan Davis.

The Redskins have made their first two cuts. Neither were surprises. The Redskins have released QB Johnathan Crompton. Crompton was released a few days ago, but resigned one day later, likely to just get through the final pre-season game. The Redskins have also released their seventh round draft pick from the 2010 NFL Draft, G/C Erik Cook. LB DJ Holt has also been released.
