Final Redskins roster thoughts
The final Washington Redskins roster reduction are complete and the Redskins now focus on opening week, next week against the Dallas Cowboys. There were very few surprises, at least from our stand point.
Only two mild surprises from my perspective were on offense. I though draft pick WR Terrence Austin played well enough for a final roster spot. Instead, Austin goes ton the waiver wire and then to the practice squad. Instead, the Redskins chose to keep the speedy Brandon Banks. Fellow DCPSR owner Spence loves that. Me, well, I love Banks speed, I love the fact he can be a big play threat with explosiveness, but lets face it, I worry about Banks hands. Only saving grace is the fact I suspect Banks will not be on then field much.
Additionally, I thought the Redskins would carry four running backs. Given Ryan Torain' past with Mike Shanahan and the fact he did pretty well, I did not expect him to be on practice squad. That is not to take away from Keiland Williams. Williams won this spot because he will help on Redskins special teams. Sounds like a Danny Smith choice.
No surprises on the offensive line. Selvish Capers is just too raw. William Robinson I thought would make it. I smell another offensive tackle move to come. Kudos to Shanny and staff for finally ousting former third round pick Chad Rinehart. He has not been good since coming here and the fact he was demoted during camp spelled out his fate. Another Vinny Cerrato failed upper draft pick.
Speaking of draft picks, Mike Shanahan only had two of his picks make the roster. Bad thing? Not to me. To me, Shanahan proved draft status earns you little. Best 53 players make the roster. Keeping a player because he was a draft pick only does not serve the roster justice. Best 53.
Defensively, I was mildly surprised Byron Westbrook made it over Ramzee Robinson. I did not think Westbrook was overly impressive. Some may be surprised that NT Anthony Bryant made the roster, but fact is, he outplayed even Maake Kemoeato. Good job by the Redskins front office getting a draft pick out of the Colts for CB Justin Tryon. He wasn't going to make the 53 man roster. Although LB Robert Henson played very well in the final preseason game, I can't help bur think the injury played the significant role here. Why no IR?
One final note, reported earlier was that TE Logan Paulsen was released. I thought it was quite odd for the Redskins to enter the season with just Fred Davis and Chris Cooley. Turns out Paulsen was a last minute decision and did indeed make the final roster.
