Tracking the Rookie Quarterbacks: Week 1
DISCUSS IT IN OUR REDSKINS FORUM!
Five rookie quarterbacks started a game today, an NFL record for week one of any season. The focus during the offseason has been on Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, the first and second picks in the 2012 NFL Draft, respectively. However, I will be tracking all five this year and we will add any other rookie passers who get real playing time this season. We will award a weekly winner each week, based on player performance, and will keep a running tally for the entire 2012 season. Here are the results for week one.
| PLAYER | COMP | ATT | YARD | AVG | TD/INT | RATING | RUSH | W/L |
| Robert Griffin | 19 | 26 | 320 | 12.3 | 2/0 | 139.9 | 42 | W, 40-32 |
| Russell Wilson | 18 | 34 | 153 | 4.5 | 1/1 | 62.5 | 20 | L, 16-20 |
| Andrew Luck | 23 | 45 | 309 | 6.9 | 1/3 | 52.9 | 9 | L, 21-41 |
| Ryan Tannehill | 20 | 36 | 219 | 6.1 | 0/3 | 39 | -1 | L, 10-30 |
| Brandon Weeden | 12 | 35 | 118 | 3.4 | 0/4 | 5.1 | 25 | L, 16-17 |
RG3 was great in week 1
RG3 was the only one of the five rookie passers to win his pro debut and he did it in spectacular fashion, racking up the highest passer rating of any quarterback, rookie or veteran, on Sunday. Wilson was on the lower side of mediocre, but he did have his team in position to win a road division game against the Cardinals before a 4th down pass from inside the 5-yard line was broken up in the end zone. Luck was overmatched all day by a very good Bears defense and threw his only TD late in the game, long after the game was no longer in doubt. Tannehill and Weeden were both terrible, with the latter being particularly so.
