Redskins want to trade down

It's pretty obvious the Redskins want to trade down from the 4 spot and pick up extra selections, something that's not a bad idea because they have no picks in the 2nd and 3rd round. Apparently, Mike Shanahan is worried his team has too many holes to fill with just the picks he currently has. Or perhaps he's just terrified of being bored to death and having nothing to do for about 48 hours after the team makes its pick early in the first round. Most likely, it's a bit of both.

If the Redskins can trade down and add more picks, what might they do with them? Well, if it was me, I'd grab as many offensive linemen as the law will allow. The Redskins have major question marks at left tackle, right tackle and right guard and there is virtually no quality OL depth on the roster. I stated on a recent podcast that if the Redskins did nothing but draft offensive linemen in this draft, I'd be fine with it. That won't happen, but maybe it should.

Failing a shopping list of nothing but big ugly blockers, the Redskins might start looking at wide receivers in the second round. Golden Tate of Notre Dame and Demaryius Thomas of Georgia Tech would be two possibilities, thought I'm hearing Thomas could rocket up the draft tonight if teams are wary of selecting Dez Bryant, who has many personal question marks around him, as well as some uninspiring 40 times.

I'm still not buying all this stuff about trading up -- the Redskins would have to mortgage next year's draft to do it -- and I hope think this OT Trent Williams nonsense is a lot of smoke and mirrors to keep the Lions from taking OT Russell Okung with the second pick. Why?

Obviously, the Redskins are letting people know they may very well take Berry. If you believe that and you're proven correct tonight, good for you. I don't buy it. I think they're trying to get someone panicked enough to trade up for their fourth spot. Trading out of a high spot like fourth is notoriously difficult and the Redskins are pulling out all the stops to convince some team[s] that they're crazy to draft Berry or Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen. I do believe this is all an elaborate smoke screen and that they are just trying to trade down.
