The Annual Washington Redskins Blog Review

Written by Mark Buterbaugh on . Posted in Washington Redskins

YOU CAN OF COURSE DISCUSS THIS IN THE REDSKINS PARK FORUM

It's that time of year --- Washington Redskins football is returning soon, very soon. Like we the last two years, we do it again for 2010, it is time to give you, our readers, a viewers guide to Washington Redskins blogs on the Internet. We rank them and tell you what we like or do not like about each one. It's subjective, it's our opinion and our opinion only.  You may feel different.  So be it.  When giving the start rankings, we looked at content, depth of coverage, design and look, activity, and originality and creativity.  A little bit about our rankings. We will rank sites in the following manner

Media Blogs: These are the DC media blogs and stand apart from the rest. But, we will still tell you what we think.

Recommended Reads: These are the blogs that we view as the best of the best on the web for Redskins content.

***** (Very good Redskins Blogs, some of the best based on content, design, activity, and all that other crap we make up) **** (Good, solid Redskins blogs) *** (Decent, average blogs) ** Not sure what is going on here * Absolutely poor --- In addition, we have our Tribal Burying Ground of Redskins blogs that have died.

Of course this is subjective, but it is our subjective opinion. It is all based on what we think of content quality, design, writing, presentation, and posting regularity.

THE MEDIA BLOGS

SITE: Matt Terl's Official Redskins Blog:

DCPSR RANKING: * * * * * DOES IT LINK TO DCPSR: YES ON TWITTER: YES @redskinsblog

Matt Terl's official Redskins blog is the best. Matt's blog is the official blog of Redskins.com. He provides in depth and close up coverage of the Redskins, because he is right there. We like his style, we appreciate his links, and we often provide linking info in our coverage to his blog and in our daily Redskins article at season time, Smoke Signals. Many of Matt's posts include topics that are so personal related to players, because he is right there at Redskins Park. Excellent read and should be a bookmark for any die hard AND casual Redskins fan.

DCPSR RANKING: * * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: NO On Twitter: YES @RedskinsInsider
Jason Reid's the man on the block at the moment and we love his stuff. Jason's Redskins Insider is the official Redskins blog of the Washington Post. Some Redskins fans out there are critical of the Post coverage, but we here at DCPSR enjoy it. Reid does an outstanding job scooping the stories, getting the details quickly, and always coming up with fresh topics. In fact, look around at many of the Redskins Forums, including ours, and Reid's stories often create their own topics. It really is an excellent blog and I think the coverage has gotten better under Reid, sorry Jason LaCanfora, no offense intended. Again, not just the die hards out there, but for casual fans that just want to keep up to date, Redskins Insider is a must bookmark, period.

DCPSR RANKING: * * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: NO On Twitter: YES @john_keim

John Keim from the DC Examiner is one of the absolute favorites of Tom and I here at DCPSR. We link to Keim often, we retweet Keim often, and we always go to Keim for our Redskins Roundtables. Why? Because he is the best. It's our opinion and we challenge you to challenge it, but checking out Keim's coverage at the DC Examiner. The Washington Post used to own Redskins coverage, but not anymore. Keim is one of those reasons. His content and analysis is intriguing and dead on. That is why we actually do read Keim everyday and often link to his articles. A natural born Redskins football writer, Keim gives great scoop and in depth coverage from top to bottom. I have personally been reading Keim's content way back 12 years ago when I started a simple Geocities site called Mark's Redskins. Bookmark it and make it a Redskins staple to your daily feed. Geesh, we aren't even getting paid for this great advertisement. It's just our opinion. One thing Keim doesn't do is link to us and he will get a piece of my mind for that!

SITE: The Rick Snider Report

DCPSR RANKING: * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: YES ON TWITTER: YES @Snide_Remarks

Rick is an excellent columnist for the DC Examiner and his personal blog is a treat to read. He provides good, fresh content and has a RSS subscription. For our Redskins coverage, particularly in the Smoke Signals column and we have no problem linking to his articles. I am a fan of the Snyder Report and you should be too. The DC Examiner does a pretty nice job during the season as well, with Notes and other tidbits. Snider and Keim make a great one-two punch for Redskins coverage.

SITE: CSN Washington (Rich Tandler) - CSN Washington

DCPSR RANKING: * * * * * DOES IT LINK TO US: NO ON TWITTER: YES @RealRedskins

You have to bookmark Rich Tandler's CSN blog. Tandler always has done a fantastic job writing about the Redskins. Like Keim, Tandler is one of my favorite reads and a guy we turn to often for our Redskins Roundtable because of the great respect we have for his coverage and knowledge. This is a no miss and a must bookmark. He is a great writer and his content is awesome. You are going to get in depth, well thought out articles with a ton of analysis. Rich is also the author of the book, Redskins A to Z. You can also buy his new book, The Redskins Chronicles. We give respect to Tandler because he has earned it. SITE:

Redskins End Zone (Ryan O'Halloran) - CSN Washington

DCPSR RANKING: * * * * DOES IT LINK TO US: NO ON TWITTER: YES @ryanohalloran

Ryan was the former Redskins beat reporter at the Washington Times, before the Times dropped sports coverage. O'Halloran's talent for coverage was too much for CSN to pass up on and he now blogs for CSN. The coverage is not daily yet, but you can bet once the Redskins season commences, so will O'Halloran's blog. We enjoyed O'Halloran's coverage at the Times, so no doubt, it will be a prime read for us come season. Bookmark it and read it.

DCPSR RECOMMENDED READS

Hogs Haven: DCPSR RANKING: * * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: YES On Twitter: YES RSS:  YES AFFILIATED:  SB NATION

Hogs Haven is the Redskins site for the SB Nation. Always been a fan of these guys, they do an awesome job and the commenting is ridiculous. DCPSR has an excellent relationship with Hogs Haven and we link to article and in return they oblige. These guys do some good in depth blog posts on a variety of topics, and you get it daily to. Not just one daily piece, or two, you get the point. This is not only a must bookmark for die hards, but if you are a casual fan and just want to stay informed, this is an excellent place to start and end, along of course with us at DCPSR. They don't miss a beat, they provide coverage, opinion, and great content. They get access and have coverage credentials. Really, there is nothing to not like at Hogs Haven. We are readers. I would actually be surprised if you have not come across Hogs Haven. Make it part of your daily read along with the media blogs and with us here at DCPSR. It is easy to highly recommend because the content is the best, designs is sleep, originality, creativity,a nd frequency of posting is superb.  It's the SB Nation look and has the power of the SB Nation behind it with tons of comments and interaction.

Homer McFanBoy: DCPSR RANKING: * * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: YES On Twitter: YES RSS: YES AFFILIATED:  NONE

An absolute favorite read of mine, both for Redskins and Capitals coverage. If you haven't checked this blog out, just what exactly are you waiting for. These articles are in depth, great in detail, and super in opinion. Homer's a gifted blogger and you should subscribe to the feed and bookmark the site. The design is simple and much like Tandler's blog above, it is designed to be a blog and that is what it does. Just like Keim and Tandler, Murf is a guy we turn frequently to for our Redskins Roundtables because of the respect we have for his writing and his knowledge of the Redskins. If you don't read Homer's site, you simply don't understand what you are missing. I read it daily and you should too.  Murf uses originality and creativity better than most and helped earn him the Highly Recommended label.  Good stuff.

Real Redskins: DCPSR RANKING: * * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: YES On Twitter: YES RSS:  YES AFFILIATED:  CSN WASHINGTON

You have to bookmark Rich Tandler's site. Yes, it is the same Rich Tandler that blogs for CSN Washington. However, this is Tandler's personal blog. It has been around for a long time and is a must read. He is a great writer and his content is awesome. You are not going to get little snippets here. You can subscribe by email and by RSS. This is a must stop. The design is simply, but effective for the purpose of Rich's Redskins thoughts. Rich is also the author of the book, Redskins A to Z. You can also buy his new book, The Redskins Chronicles. Check out Rich's site and bookmark it while you are there.

TheWarpath Confidential:     DCPSR RANKING: * * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: NO On Twitter: YES RSS:  YES AFFILIATED:  NO

This is a conglomerate of different bloggers. You have to bookmark because it is going to be a superb site. You can subscribe to site RSS feed and to their official magazine. The coverage is awesome and the quality is top notch. The design is your typical three column, blog format, it works for what they are doing. They have guys like John Pappas, John Keim, Rick Snider, and Rich Tandler contributing. We like it, we read it, and we bookmark it. So follow our lead. It moves from a regular 5 * * * * * last year to a Highly Recommended read this year.

Riggo's Rag: DCPSR RANKING: * * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: YES On Twitter: YES RSS:  YES AFFILIATED:  FANSIDED, YARDBARKER

This is our FanSided Partner site and they do an excellent job at coverage. We will be linking and sharing often come football season. You can expect daily coverage from here on out since the season has rolled around. You can subscribe via RSS feed, you can follow on Twitter and Facebook, and you have the advantage here of the FanSided Network coverage of the NFL, with all NFL teams represented. They have the slick design of all Fansided sites. Their coverage is in depth, well written, and a timely perspective. You will not get short snippets of news here, they do a great job of coverage and compliment the FanSided Network well. We link to them often and will do so more as the season rolls around. You read us, you will get used to Riggos Rag as well as they will become a central part of Washington DC sports coverage through the FanSided Network here at DCPSR. My bet is, take a look, read their stuff, and you will bookmark our partner site.  The originality and creativity is pretty good, design we like of course, because we use it, and the frequency of posting is daily.  It's a good read and it should be read by you.

Mister Irrelevant: DCPSR RANKING: * * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: NO On Twitter: YES RSS:  YES AFFILIATED:  YARDBARKER

A great read. I read it daily. They cover more than just the Redskins, but also the Caps, Nats, O's, Wizards, and more. You've likely have already run across it unless you live under a rock. Tom likes their Wizards coverage as well. They also do a daily links post to top stories for the day. In depth, news breaking articles. It is a MUST daily read if you want to be an informed fan. Fun, exciting site. Bookmark it and subscribe to it. I do. You should to.  We have upgraded Mister Irrelevant from a 5 STAR last year to a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED this year, because we love the stuff man!

5 Star Ranks

theHogs.net: DCPSR RANKING: * * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: YES On Twitter: YES RSS:  YES AFFILIATED:  FAN2FAN

One of the leading stops on the Web for Washington Redskins coverage. In depth analysis, draft coverage, roster analysis, a super active fan forum. These guys have it all, including a flashy design and look, or a more subtle version, you pick. The coverage is in depth with multiple writers and is a fully loaded site with multiple pages and stacks of information. Pretty wide history section and a very cool section of their own content on, you guessed it, the Hogs! These guys also have a fan forum. Tons of images. Tons of links. Just an overall, kick ass job.  Originality, creativity, frequency, and design, they have it all here.

Hog Heaven: DCPSR RANKING: * * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: YES On Twitter: YES RSS:  YES AFFILIATED:  BLOGUIN

This is the network Redskins site for the Bloguin Network. Anthony Brown has been covering the Redskins by blog since I can remember. Bookmark it. Anthony does a pretty decent job covering the Redskins. You will get daily content and fresh, and timely perspective. You can also subscribe to his RSS feed and get your daily dose. Anthony teams up with another writer, Greg Trippiedi . He does just as god of a job. We encourage you to bookmark it.  Anthony puts up good original articles.

Redskins Gab: DCPSR RANKING: * * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: NO On Twitter: YES RSS:  YES AFFILIATED:  GAB NETWORK

I like this blog. It was a relatively new stop last time we did this review and is a member of the Gab sports network of blogs. Simple, sleek, clean design, nothing flashy, just quality content. For the most part, you get a daily read here. Good, solid articles. I would encourage you to make a visit. You can subscribe by email or by RSS feed. If you are looking for short, few line stories, you won't get it here. This really is a good read.

Brooding Burgundy:

DCPSR RANKING:  * * * * * DO THEY LINK TO DCPSR:  NO On Twitter:  YES RSS:  YES AFFILIATED:  NONE

A newbie to our Blog review.  Love the look and feel.  Sleek design.  Excellent content.  Stories are original.  Cool background, nice overall look.  Check it our and bookmark it.  Good, quality read!  Good enough for us to debut it at a 5 STAR ranking.  As you can see below with many new blogs to the review, we simply do not rank new blogs at a 5 Star the first year.  This is an exception to that rule.  The originality, creativity, and frequency of posting deem it worthy.
DCPSR RANKING:  * * * * * DO THEY LINK TO DCPSR:  YES On Twitter:  YES RSS:  YES AFFILIATED:  BLOGUIN
Another newbie to our Blog review, not that they are new, but new to us.  Love the site.  They, like us, carry more than just the Redskins and they will be included in our other team reviews, like the Capitals.  Good stuff.  Member of the Bloguin network of sites.  Can subscribe via RSS.  Good, quality content, original coverage.  This is worth your time and eyes.  We debut it as a 5 STAR rating because, well, we like it and read it.  They use originality and creativity to make top quality posts.  There coverage of the Redskisn is superb.  You will enjoy it, make the visit.  Good job guys!

The Om Field:

DCPSR RANKING: * * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: YES On Twitter:  YES RSS:  YES AFFILIATED:  NONE

Om is one of the most active members at Extremeskins (or was, not sure anymore) and now has a new, excellent community himself. We encourage you to take a visit. Om's articles are a thrill to read. They are sometimes weekly, sometimes more often. Don't let that fool you though. You don't have to have a daily blog to be a damn good blog. Om's blog posts are full of rich detail, analysis, and insightful. He takes stances on numerous Redskins timely issues. It is an excellent read and we have his site bookmarked and link to his articles at time sin our Some Signals. We also from time to time invite Mark into the Redskins Round Table when he has time. His insight and care he takes in writing is abundantly clear. I know we are piling you up with reading MUSTS but add another one. Last year we ranked The Om Field a 4 star, this year we upgrade it to a FIVE STAR.

4 Star Rating

Redskins Post:

DCPSR RANKING: * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: NO On Twitter:   YES    RSS:

Cool looking blog with updated coverage.  Original stories are  well written.  It is a debut and we debut it a 4 Star because we normally don't debut at 5 STAR.  It likely will be a 5 Star next year.  The originality, creativity, and frequency of posting are exceptional.  This is a well put together blog with an attractive look.  Check it out.  You can subscribe via RSS and follow on Twitter.  You won't be disappointed with what you see.

It is What it Is:

Used to be the Walking Deadman Blog and now goes by this name.  Covers more than the Redskins, but the Redskins coverage is pretty damn good.  Nice read.  Check it out.  Can subscribe via RSS and follow on Twitter.  We debut it under this name as a 4STAR because it is worthy of your eyes.  It will likely be a 5 start next year, but we do not make it a habit to debut a blog as a 5 star.  All black background, tyical Blogspot look.  Give it a try, go read and bookmark it.

Staying Medium

DCPSR RANKING: * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: YES On Twitter:  YES RSS:  NOT SURE AFFILIATED:  NONE

A new add and we debut it at a 5 STAR.  Nice blog.  Great content.  Does not post daily yet, but something tells me looking at the quality writing they will during the season.  Got position previews up.  It is a bit of a pessimistic look at the Redskins, but seriously, given the last two decades, can you really blame him.  Were debuting it at a 5 STAR because we like what we see.  We challenge you to check it out as well.  Starts a Redskins folder and put this in it.  It will likely be a 5 start next year, but we do not make it a habit to debut a blog as a 5 star.

Skins Talk

DCPSR RANKING: * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: YES ON TWITTER:  NO RSS:  YES AFFILIATED:  NONE

This blog appeared in our rankings last year for the first time. It is nice to see it is still going strong and on the verge of 5 STAR status. Has quality, fresh content. Is this worth a visit and read? Absolutely. It is a two column blogspot design, nothing sleek, but serves the purpose. His articles are usually timely pieces discussing the most recent hot topics for the Redskins. Doesn't appear at this point to blog daily, but blogs often. I suspect he will be close to daily blogging come season time. Nice blog and worth your look, your read, and your bookmark.

NFL Fan House: DCPSR RANKING: * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: YES On Twitter: YES RSS:  YES AFFILIATED:  FAN HOUSE

This is the AOL site. Pretty updated during the season looks like their daily content has started. I like the Fan House coverage and this site is no different. Quality reads, quality content, quality opinions. I expect nothing else from the Fan House network of blogs and you get it here too.

Paint It Redskins DCPSR RANKING: * * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: YES On Twitter: No Idea RSS:  YES AFFILIATED:  NONE

Looks like it is part of a sports network, Fanball. The look is clear and crisp. The stories on the main page are just small snippets, so make sure you click read the rest of the entry for the full article. Has an RSS feed and subscription. Looks like they will provide good, quality season coverage. You won't get pictures or videos here, this appears to be strictly text blogging.

The Curly R: DCPSR RANKING: * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: YES On Twitter: YES

Another good read that Tom and I used to frequent often. Ben did a nice job with his posts, provided some great content and discussion, and spread the topics out. It is a generic blogspot design that you can see all over the Internet through Blogspot. There has been no posting since June 24. I see that Ben had some shoulder surgery, so I am not quite sure if he is just off for that right now or if Curly R is disappearing. We suspect during the season it will be. If you a real Redskins fan, you should make Ben's blog, the Curly R, a stop. Top right you can add the Curly R to your RSS reader and subscribe to the feed. Due to the lack of activity and the uncertainty of it's future, we downgraded Curly R from 4 starts to 3 starts this year.

Harry Hog Football: DCPSR RANKING: * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: NO (not sure why) On Twitter: YES

This one has been around forever and you got to make the visit. We aren't seeing any daily content yet. This is the home of the Original Redskins podcast, complete with a message line. You real Redskins fans out there, get subscribed to this podcast! If you want to subscribe to the Podcast, LINK HERE. This is a new design to the blog, kind of neat looking. Looks like Harry has also shifted to a social community type situation. But, give it a read and try and a hear! My assumption here is that the Harry Hog blog is not the central focus.

hailRedskins: DCPSR RANKING: * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: NO On Twitter: NO

It appears the focus has shifted to the forum. Most of the blog posts that do appear are one or two paragraph, restatement of news. No much opinion content available. Not much consistency or rhythm to the coverage, especially in the off-season. Creativity is limited. There were 3 posts in July, 5 in June, and 1 in May. Internal page content is old, looking at the Stats page, still lists Shaun Alexander and Keenan McCardell as players. If you want quick review news during the season, worth your look, if you are looking for in depth coverage, opinion related content, or creative posting, probably not going to find it here anymore.

The Redskins Locker: DCPSR RANKING: * * * DO THEY LINK WITH DCPSR: NO On Twitter: NO IDEA

This site appears to be a in a common network of sites, I am assuming they are all titled Locker. The content is a little more consistent as far as coverage, still not quite sure if they have a full time type writer here. It is better than last year, it is worth your look. We are upgrading it from a 2 Star last year to a 3 Star this year.
