Lorenzo Alexander rejects Redskins' contract offer

Pro Bowl special teamer/linebacker Lorenzo Alexander isan unrestricted free agent and the Washington Redskins are over the salary cap. Those two facts being the case, it should come as no surprise that contract negotiations may prove difficult. Alexander has rejected Washington's first contract offer and it now seems likely he will test the free agency waters next month.

“They offered me a deal but obviously at this point I’m not going to jump into it and sign right away,” Alexander said. “There’s a lot of stuff going on. At this point we’ll play the waiting game and be patient and see what’s the best thing to do for myself and my family. Hopefully that’s with the Redskins . I don’t expect them to outbid anybody but from what I’ve done and sacrificed and what I’ve earned on the field, obviously that’s going to bring a certain dollar amount. There will be interest from other teams. But you really know when free agency starts what your value is.

“I’m willing to take less for the Redskins, but they have to be close. They can’t be way off.”

That sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Alexander will turn 30 this offseason and has never earned a ton of money by NFL standards. This is probably his last best chance to make himself comfortable for the rest of his life and he should jump on it. The Skins have an unjust $18 million penalty hanging over their heads as a result of the team being unwilling to cooperate in the league's illegal antitrust behavior during the 2010 uncapped year. A player like Alexander, who has been with the Redskins since 2006, may fall through the cracks.

Losing Alexander would be a blow to the team, though. He's a team captain, a leader, their best special teams player and a versatile defender who has played defensive tackle, defensive end, outside linebacker and inside linebacker during his career. He's done everything the Redskins have asked of him and then some. He belongs in Washington. Let's hope it works out that way.

@BigManPauly @DCProSportsRep I have a gut feeling he is out the door.

@Octotron Per Zo, if Allen stands pat with his offer, he just might be. See Jenkins, Cullen

@CoachBo82 @octotron Zo is a great teammate and ST player. Been a good story he whole career. But he turns 30 this May.

@c4man5282 Jackson is better in run support and pass coverage. Bring him in on 3rd down to spell Fletch or Riley, let Rak and Kerrigan rush

@c4man5282 completely agree. Dude did just about everything the team asked of him. It's rare you find a guy who can play G, DT, OLB, and ILB

@CoachBo82 don't know about the whole RJ moving to ILB. Don't think he is a fit there IMO.

@CoachBo82 very hard to say…really like Zo but he isn't getting younger and Shanny seems to like younger players which is a nice change.

@c4man5282 hard to say this, but Zo can be replaced. Might mean we can keep Rob Jackson and move him to ILB

@CoachBo82 Agree. I'm sure age and his role play a big part in the contract Bruce offered him.

@c4man5282 no argument from me. Just saying turning down a Bruce Allen offer hasn't worked out well in the past.

@Octotron @DCProSportsRep I sure hope you're wrong about that. But still the Redskins have time To offer him another contract.
